I have a query passed to me by the Idrija Mercury Mine in Slovenia. They
are looking at early remedies for the ecological problems associated with
mining operations and would like to make comparisons with other mining areas
in Europe.
What, if any, documentation exists for ecological problems, pollution, heavy
metal contamination, etc., in mining? Clearly they are looking for early
instances where the problems have been identified. Those which come to my
mind are largely connected with river pollution and the damage to fish
stocks - a cause for complaint by landowners downstream, and not in receipt
of royalties, from mining.
