The Beaumont-English company was run by a Colonel Beaumont. In
October 1880, under a contract with the South Eastern Railway Comany,
the Beaumont-English tunnelling machine began to tunnel under the
English Channel. In July 1881 the machine was stopped after
tunnelling over 900 yards. The machine was built by Fowlers of Leeds
(famous for steam ploughing engines etc.). For an illustration of this
machine and much more on the Beaumont-English Company see:- "From
Charing Cross to Baghdad, A History of the Whitaker Tunnel Boring
Machine and the Channel Tunnel" by Paul Varley.
I hope this is helpful.
