There is actually a set of Guidelines on the Application of Health & Safety Legislation to Underground Exploration. It was recently redesigned and perhaps I am biased in thinking the orignal version was more user friendly (OK so I wrote it!). However those guidelines major more on the legislation element rather
than conservation.
I know that taking novices underground has also come in for some stick from club cavers but they should note that the leadership qualification (Local Cave/Mine Leadership Assessment) has conservation aspects high on the syllabus and in fact the candidates fail if they do not demonstrate knowledge of this (I know
this since I helped to devise the mine side of the LCMLA syllabus and piloted the first one in North Wales!). Thus I would actually say that novice groups treat mines better than a lot of club cavers I know.
Finally, (and I am embarrassed that all of this email seems like a personal advert!!!) there is a national mining database with details of sites, etc (see URL below). This is not only for Mid-Wales but also the whole of the UK and Ireland. Rather than set up a duplicate website would this guy not be better just
pointing at that URL? (and yes... you guessed it... I run it!!!!).
