Valuable Lessons: Engaging with the social context of science in schools
Dr Ralph Levinson, University of London Institute of Education.
Discussant: Dr Ian Gibson, Chairman, House of Commons Select Committee on
Science and Technology
An important current issue for science education is how to reconcile the
teaching of the minority who will go on to scientific careers with the needs
of all pupils, as future citizens and consumers, to understand the social
and economic context of science. Dr Levinson will report the findings of
his research on current educational practice in teaching about
socio-scientific issues to the 14-19 age group in schools in England and
Wales. The presentation will also draw on the results of a day-conference
held in December which engaged a wide range of practitioners and analysts in
focusing on the priorities for policy and practice arising from the
research.
Tuesday 5 March 2002 1200-1400 Venue: IMechE, 1 Birdcage Walk, London SW1H
9JJ room t.b.a.
Science Shops: Extending public access to S&T
Dr Eileen Martin, Director, Northern Ireland Science Shop. Science Shops
are a by now well established if still novel institution designed to extend
the range of people able to access and make use of science and technology.
Dr Martin will talk about the work of the Northern Ireland Science Shop but
also reflect on other recent experiments in broadening research access and
speculate on future developments.
