CONFERENCE: Women and Science: What are the issues? What
can we do?'
Wednesday 23rd October 2002, 11am-5pm
London Metropolitan University
The day will feature key speakers from a range of disciplinary
backgrounds as well as fore-grounding recent research findings from
Athena projects.
The day will culminate in the launch of the new Scientific Women’s
Academic Network, hosted by London Metropolitan University and
the
University of Luton.
Speakers
Prof. Frances Ashcroft, FRS, Royal Society GlaxoSmithKline
Research professorship, University of Oxford has provisionally
agreed to give the key note address, discussing her career as an
academic scientist. Dr. Alison Adam, Senior Lecturer in the
Information Systems Institute at the University of Salford will speak
on ‘Gender and Ethics in IT’. Dr. Adam spent several years working in
the software industry before joining academia. Her research interests
are computer ethics and gender and information technology and she has
a book on the subject. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Luton, Kate Robinson, will speak about the Luton Athena project on
inclusive committees. Professor Rafaella Ocone, Heriot-Watt
University, will speak about the Heriot-Watt ‘DRAW’ Athena project
that examined barriers to retention and progression of women
academics. The Vice-Chancellor and CEO of London Metropolitan
University (Brian Roper) will welcome participants and introduce the

How much does it cost?
There is a nominal charge of £10.00 but the first forty places are
free so you are advised to book early. The booking fee can’t be
refunded but we will accept a substitute if you are unable to attend.
