Formerly known as the Teaching Company Scheme, TCS is funded by the Research Councils, DTI, DEFRA, the Department of Health and a number of other government bodies concerned with the issue of knowledge transfer. TCS helps companies to draw on the expertise of the knowledge-based sector to carry forward key development projects within the company.
As part of this scheme, a TCS Associate is required to work with the Department of Museum Studies and mwr Ltd to develop an online learning system for tertiary education and the museum and gallery sector.
Developing both intellectual and technical skills, the post will offer considerable opportunities for an individual to work alongside academic staff at a leading postgraduate department, as well as an online publishing company with a strong interest in knowledge management.
This post is available for two years, and will be based at mwr's premises in Winchester.
As part of the overall remit to enhance and develop existing educational software to enable it to function as an Integrated Learning Management System (ILMS), targeted at the tertiary education and museum and gallery sector, specific tasks include:
researching existing e-learning systems, with particular reference to tertiary education and the museum and gallery sector;
researching existing markets and target markets identified by mwr;
reviewing mwr's existing software tools and outline specs for beta version of ILMS;
refining and clarify functional scope of the beta version;
liaising with content providers, enabling a beta version to be built, including authoring;
evaluating results of beta version of the ILMS;
assisting with the development and delivery of version 1.0 of the ILMS; and providing training and assistance with the dissemination of version 1.0.
The person appointed will have:
a minimum Upper Second Honours degree in any discipline, and a relevant postgraduate qualification (MA, MSc) would be a clear advantage;
knowledge of the museum and gallery sector;
a high degree of IT literacy and some familiarity with Web-based technologies;
good communication skills and the ability to understand varied educational needs, to work productively with technical staff, and also to be comfortable in a 'customer facing role' with major cultural heritage institutions and education institutions;
some experience in the education sector (for example teaching), would be an advantage;
a passion for the contribution of online technologies to the learning experience in a range of cultural settings.
