INVITATION TO JOIN THE BASA RESEARCH RESOURCES WORKING PARTY

The BASA Research Resources Working Party is a sub-committee of the Black
and Asian Studies Association (BASA), currently based at the Institute of
Commonwealth Studies (University of London). It was formulated as a result
of a National Conference on Ethnic Minority Archives convened by BASA on 23
January 1999, which identified a lack of easily accessible information on
the records/archives of peoples of African, Caribbean and South Asian
descent, and other minority ethnic groups, who have contributed to UK
heritage over the centuries. Since its inception the Working Party has
sought to raise awareness about the wealth of recorded history on the black
and Asian presence in the United Kingdom housed in various types of
libraries, archives, museums, community organisations and other repositories
throughout the country.

The aims of the Working Party are:

To raise awareness of the records relating to the history of black and Asian
peoples in Britain
To encourage all custodians (archivists, curators, librarians, records
managers, etc.) and users of record repositories to record data on these
histories
To encourage archivists and other records managers to issue guides on their
relevant archival holdings and research collections
To encourage British peoples from minority ethnic communities, specifically
peoples of African, Caribbean and South Asian descent, into the archives and
information/records management professions and ensure that training for
these professions incorporates the history of black and Asian peoples in the
UK.
To encourage black and Asian peoples and community organisations to collect
materials and ensure their long-term preservation
To encourage record repositories to engage in outreach work regarding the
preservation of black and Asian archive materials.
Currently the BASA Research Resources Working Party meets four times per
year on the first Wednesday in March, June, September and December. The next
meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 5th June 2002 at 1.30pm in the Menzies
Room at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies 28 Russell Square, London WC1B
5DS (nearest tube: Russell Square, Piccadilly Line). As this meeting will
also be the Working Party's AGM it offers an opportunity for anyone
interested in issues relating to black and Asian history resources,
community outreach, access issues and social inclusion within the archives,
museum, library and information sectors to get involved in future
initiatives. Participation in the work of the BASA RRWP archives sub-group,
the keywords-sub group (currently looking at cataloguing and indexing
issues) and a new group seeking to design/develop the RRWP section of the
BASA web site is encouraged.

If you would like to attend the meeting (and become a member of the Working
Party's email discussion list), please send your contact details to: Ian
Johnston (Secretary), Brent Archive, 152 Olive Road, Cricklewood, London,
NW2 6UY (Email: [log in to unmask]).

You can also join the Working Party's email discussion list directly by
visiting the JISC web site at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk and selecting
BASA-RESEARCH-RESOURCES from the A-Z index of public lists. The address for
posting messages to the list is [log in to unmask]

Annual subscription rates for membership of the Working Party are #5 for
individuals and #10 for institutions. Over the past 12 months
representatives from the following organisations have been regular attendees
at BASA RRWP meetings: Association of Chief Archivists in Local Government,
British Film Institute, CASBAH Project, Commonwealth Institute, Future
Histories Project (Middlesex University), Historical Manuscripts Commission,
Institute of Commonwealth Studies, CILIP/Library Association Local Studies
Group, London Metropolitan Archives, National Sound Archive, Society of
Archivists, Theatre Museum, etc.

New members and visitors are most welcome!
