... as one of her favourite educational web sites
The Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Estelle Morris,
reveals her favourite educational web sites today, the 28
March, in the 'My Favourites' feature on the National Grid
for Learning (NGfL) portal.
As one of her favourite sites Ms Morris has chosen the RDN
Virtual Training Suite - http://www.vts.rdn.ac.uk/. The
Secretary of State said: "This site provides 40
subject-specific 'teach yourself' tutorials on how to find
good-quality information on the Internet. The Internet
Politician and Internet for Education tutorials introduced
me to an array of useful resources."
Each tutorial in the Suite is freely available and is
designed to help students, lecturers and researchers
improve their Internet information skills. Visitors to the
site can work in their own time and at their own pace. The
tutorials take around an hour each to complete, and include
quizzes and interactive exercises to lighten the learning
experience. The Virtual Training Suite is a service of the
Resource Discovery Network (RDN) which locates high-quality
web resources and makes them available to the further and
higher education communities. See http://www.rdn.ac.uk for
further details.
Simon Jennings, the RDN Centre Manager, said of Estelle
Morris's choice: "It's fantastic to have been selected by
the Minister - it's just reward for all the staff who
worked so hard to create the Suite. If a senior Minister is
using Internet Politician it's got to be a good starting
point for anyone studying Politics !"
Estelle Morris's other choices were:
Explore Parliament http://www.explore.parliament.uk/ and
Teacher Resource Exchange http://tre.ngfllgov.uk/
Owen Lynch, Chief Executive, Becta, said: "I am proud of
the extensive range of educational content now available
through the NGfL. I particularly welcome the Secretary of
State's active participation. She has a clear
understanding of how on-line resources, properly used, can
enrich teaching and learning for staff and pupils in our
schools."
The National Grid for Learning portal brings together more
than 650,000 pages of quality-assured learning resources
from over 650 web sites. It can be found at:
http://www.ngfl.gov.ukEnds.
The RDN Virtual Training Suite was developed at the
Institute for Learning and Research Technology, based at
the University of Bristol, in collaboration with thirty
other universities and libraries.
