Dear Lesley and all other Lis-E readers,
Although I have replied to Lesley personally, I thought it would be worth
addressing some of the issues raised in Lesley's email of yesterday as I
suspect that she is not alone in the frustration she feels! The latter part
of the email is broken down into questions and answers.
Before I directly answer the questions, I would like to apologise for any
frustration and confusion launching Ingenta Select may have caused.
Integrating two large and complex services like Ingenta.com and CatchWord
(as was) is going to cause some
headaches along the way, but please be assured that we are doing our best to
minimise those headaches. Ongoing feedback from our customers is essential
for us to get the service right, so please continue to let us know what is
and isn't working for you. We know we won't be able to incorporate all of
your suggestions immediately, and we also know our library customers don't
always agree with each other about how they like things, but we will
certainly use your thoughts to guide our planning -- and the feedback we
have had thus far has been useful and has informed some of our planning for
the future of our service.
For those of you who have other or more specific questions about Ingenta.com
or Ingenta Select, please get in touch with our Customer Service team on
[log in to unmask] or on 01225 361110. They are there to help you!
If you have comments on the service in general, or would be willing to help
us test new products and services as we develop them, please email us on

We are working very hard to make sure we are keeping our users and libary
administrators well informed of future changes and necessary adjustments as
the integration progresses. Please make sure that you are signed up for one
of our newsletters, as that is the only way we can be sure to reach you!
(you can choose which at

Thanks!
All the best
Sam

1. Which site should we link to for new subscriptions?
Whichever site you are most comfortable with. We will continue to support
links to both sites for some time to come; there will of course come a time
when we are only running one site, though exactly what we are going to do
about our links has yet to be determined. We may in the future need to
change our linking syntax, but until we know exactly how we are going to
proceed you can continue to link to either or both sites as you prefer. *If*
and/or when we do change our linking syntax, please rest assured that we
will take into account the dynamics of the academic year and will endeavour
to give you pleny of time to make any changes you may need to, and provide
as much support to you in so doing as we can. I must stress that we have not
made any decisions on this yet -- and when we do, one of our primary
concerns is that we keep the work we ask of our library administrators down
to a minimum.
In light of that, we have tried to create as little work as possible at this
stage -- please keep all of your links just as they are.
2. If the sites are both the same in terms of full text content why have two
sites at all, is one just a subset of the other?
The electronic journal content available on both sites is exactly the same.
Ingenta Select contains some additional book content that Ingenta.com does
not, and Ingenta.com incorporates a fax/Ariel service for thousands of
additional publications not available in electronic format.
We also have legacy user communities who are comfortable and familiar with
one or other of the interfaces. Given that when we go to a single site we
will have a new user interface, we wanted to cause as little disruption as
possible to our current users, and ask them to only change user interface
once.
3. Another major issue is that Ingenta.com provides for ATHENS
authentication, Ingenta Select does not at present.
True. However, Ingenta Select could support ATHENS very easily (i.e., there
would be little extra technical work involved); the reason it isn't there
already is because we are still in negotations with ATHENS. We are hoping
that these will come to an end soon, and we will be able to offer ATHENS on
Ingenta Select.
4. Lists of institutional subscriptions
The lists of subscriptions that you see on Ingenta.com and Ingenta Select is
the same list, using the same data.
It is possible to get a csv copy of this list by following the link on
http://www.ingentaselect.com/opacs.htm
Lesley was very frustrated by her consortial journals not showing up on the
list of subscriptions that she could see on either Ingenta.com or Ingenta
Select. This was an error on our part, which we have now fixed. Although
Lesley could access her subscriptions, they did not show up on the list.
It only affected the consortial deals; and it is an error that has affected
a small number of institutions. If you think it has affected your
institution too, please get in touch with our Customer Service team
([log in to unmask]) and they will be able to sort it out for you.
5. Why do we ask new individuals to register on Ingenta.com if it doesn't
matter which site we use?
Please note that this only applies to new individuals who are registering on
the site to get a user name and password.
Currently, Ingenta.com user names and passwords work on Ingenta Select, but
Ingenta Select (and old CatchWord) individual user names and passwords don't
work on Ingenta.com. This is simply a part of the design of the integration.
However, someone with an Ingenta Select user name and password can merge it
with their Ingenta.com user name and password by going to the log-in page,
and selecting the appropriate option at the bottom of the page. Once the
user names are merged, individuals are then able to use their ingenta.com
user name and password and gain access to subscriptions that they had on
Ingenta Select and on ingenta.com. This function ONLY applies to individual
user name and passwords, and should not be used by library administrators
(sorry!)
6. The SUBS button doesn't show up for some titles I know we have subs to,
which show up on our list and that we are getting access to ... why?
This is a bug we discovered yesterday, and are working on getting it fixed.
Please bear with us!

Cheers
Sam
