CAMBODIA-THAILAND:
Cambodian and Thai officials hope to iron out in November
details to settle the two countries overlapping claims over
hydrocarbon prospects in the Gulf of Thailand,
Te Duong Tara, director general of the Cambodian National
Petroleum Authority, said Oct 10.
"We are making good progress, and will be
ready to meet with top-level officials in
Bangkok in November to finalize the details,"
he said. "The Cambodian and Thai
governments are aiming to establish a treaty
for the joint development of hydrocarbon
resources located in Areas II, III and IV of
the Overlapping Claims Area, while Area I
is set to be delimited" he said. The OCA is
"highly prospective for hydrocarbons with
an estimated 11 Tcf of natural gas and undetermined
quantities of condensate and oil,"
he added.
Cambodia has proposed to Thailand
that the costs and benefits of developing
the hydrocarbon resources in the Joint
Development Area be shared equally, Te
said. "We are convinced that such an outcome
would be fair, just, and properly reflect
the legitimacy of each countrys maritime
claim," he added.
The Overlapping Claims Area includes part of the extended
Pattani basin, and the Khmer Trough. Both
prospects are thought to hold sizeable hydrocarbon
reserves.
