The International Fluency Association / Call for Papers,
Fourth World Congress on Fluency Disorders, Montreal, Canada
August 11-15, 2003
In keeping with previous International Fluency Association World
Congresses on Fluency Disorders the aim of the Fourth Congress is to
bring together clinicians, researchers, people who stutter, and other
interested parties to discuss theoretical, empirical, clinical, and
cultural approaches to fluency disorders. The program will consist of
sessions devoted to special themes, mini-seminars, research sessions,
clinical sessions, short courses and poster sessions.
Request For Presentation
Submissions for presentations related to all aspects of fluency
disorders are welcome. Submissions on the efficacy and the
effectiveness of intervention, best practice, and multi-cultural and
multi-lingual issues will be of particular interest.

Postdoctoral and Postgraduate Research Opportunities: Ireland
Development of a novel acoustic analysis technique for routine, non-
invasive clinical evaluation of pathological voice
A postdoctoral research opportunity in voice analysis has recently
become available in the Dept. of Electronic and Computer Engineering,
University of Limerick (UL), Ireland and a postgraduate position is
available in School of Clinical Speech and Language Studies, Trinity
College (TCD), Dublin 2, Ireland. The project is set to begin in
Sept./Oct. 2002. The successful candidate for the postdoctoral
position will typically have a first degree in a numerate discipline
with 3/4 years postgraduate experience in a related field. Candidates
interested in postgraduate level positions are also encouraged to
apply for the University of Limerick position. Candidates for the
latter position (TCD) will typically have a Speech and Lang. Therapy
background and will initially enrol for an M.Sc. degree.
The project consists of

Speech Production Theory/Voice Pathology Literature/Inverse Filtering

The research is funded by an Enterprise Ireland Strategic Research
grant (=8028k p.a. postdoc and =8016k postgrad., incl. full fees

Senior or Staff Scientists in Linguistics for TTS
Work on a large international project hosted at Vox Generation Ltd.
Vox is building a scientific team of 18 individuals to focus on full
mixed-initiative conversational dialogue systems. In this role, you
will research and innovate new techniques in Unified Hierarchical
Language Modelling for training conversational dialogue systems.
This project is partnered with SpeechWorks International on the
development of new language modelling techniques.
You should have a Ph.D. or pending Ph.D. in acoustic phonetics.
Desirable, training and acoustic mark-up for creating TTS
vocabularies. A Portuguese and Swedish synthesizer is being built.
Proficiency in either of these languages required. You should
understand how to interpret a spectrogram.

Principal or Senior Scientist in Digital Signal Processing for
Text-to-speech Synthesis
Work on a large international project hosted at Vox Generation Ltd.
Vox is building a scientific team of 18 individuals to focus on full
mixed-initiative conversational dialogue systems. In this role, you
will research and innovate new techniques in Unified Hierarchical
Language Modelling for training conversational dialogue systems.
This project is partnered with SpeechWorks International on the
development of new language modelling techniques.
We are developing a large-vocabulary TTS. We will implement a patent
pending technique for training and unit-selection. We will base the
TTS on an open-source standard, but productise it. We have built an
automatic prosody markup parsing scheme, reducing the need for hand
annotated corpora for prosody. You will extend this technique for
intelligent selection of speech segments using the ToBI technique.
Unique to the R&D effort, is to apply formant synthesis and acoustic
tube modelling techniques to interpret and join units. We have
demonstrated human quality limited domain voices.
You should have a Ph.D. in Digital Signal Processing, Electrical
Engineering, Mathematics or Physics. Industry experience is sought,
but you do not have had to work on TTS. Radar signal processing, for
example, is fine. You should be analytical and have demonstrated high
proficiency in mathematics. A-levels in quantitative sciences should be
perfect scores or near perfect scores.
