Conference Theme
Taking its title and inspiration from Jerome J. McGann's study, The
Textual Condition, this international postgraduate conference seeks to
explore the meaning of textuality from the wide variety of perspectives
represented by the School of English Studies at Nottingham. Following the
four keynote speakers, different conceptualisations of 'text' will be
explored in more detail through a series of interdisciplinary panels made
up of postgraduate students working within and across the fields of modern
English language, English literature, medieval studies and theatre
studies. If, as McGann states, all texts 'like all other things human,
are embodied phenomena, and the body of the text is not exclusively
linguistic', how else is it encountered? Is it a reflection or deflection
of other 'conditions' we find in our various fields? Is it even a term
that can be
embraced across the board: What does 'textual condition' mean? What
constitutes a text? Contributions to these panels are invited in the form
of twenty-minute papers that investigate the ways in which textuality has
been understood, theorised, challenged, and developed.
Full papers of 20 minutes in length will be followed by an additional 10
minutes of questions and
discussion. Abstracts should no more than 300 words in length. Please
include name, contact address (preferably email), and university
affiliation along with the title or topic and three descriptive keywords.
The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2002. Abstracts can be faxed,
emailed, or posted to:
