Particularly avid readers of the list may remember an enquiry which I posted
in late May about charges for reproduction of documents. I received replies
from five public sector repositories (Bury Metropolitan Borough Council,
Essex Record Office, Glamorgan Record Office, West Sussex Record Office and
the PRO), three specialist repositories (Canterbury Cathedral, Exeter
University and the Middle East Archives Centre, St.Antony's College, Oxford)
and one business (British Telecom).
For basic photocopying, charges ranged from 15p per sheet (A4) to 80p (A3).
Most repositories charged around 30-40p per copy, with a differential
between A4 and A3. There were also differences between what certain offices
charge for photocopies and reader-printer copies (the latter being slightly
more expensive when done by staff but usually cheaper when self-service).
A couple of the services who replied offer basic scanning services, with the
charges concerned varying widely (between £1.15 and £16). More
comprehensive digitisation services appear rare at the moment, although the
prices quoted by a service which has just begun to offer such a service
range from £10 + £2.50 per image (for images sent by e-mail) to £28 per hour
for computer-enhanced images.
Other charges quoted included £36.90 for 35mm microfilm and prices ranging
from £1.85 to £10 for microfiche.
Thanks again to all those who took the time to respond.
