Umberto,
There have been a few exotics in Ireland. There has been a barbery ape from Iron
age Navan, Co. Armagh, another from fourteenth century Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim
and documentary evidence for a camel in Ireland during the twelfth century. There
are references to them in the following.
McCormick, F.1991 'The effect of the Anglo-Norman settlement on Ireland's wild and
domesticated fauna' in P J Crabtree and K Ryan (eds) Animal use and cultural
change, 40-52, Pennsylvania University Press.
and ibid 1999 ‘Early evidence for wild animals in Ireland’ in N. Benecke (ed.) The
Holocene History of European Vertebrate Fauna, Archäologie in Eurasien 6, Berlin,
355-371.
