This is a rare opportunity to meet Emine Sevgi Ozdamar, one of
Germany's most creative writers. She will be reading from her work
in
German, and well-known writers, translators and actors will join her
to read from the translations of her work into Turkish and English.
Arcola players will present a short reading from Ozdamar's play,
Hamlet Ahmet, and there will be a panel discussion following the
readings.
Emine Sevgi Ozdamar is a fascinating author, writing in the language
of the country where she has been living since 1976. She was born in
Malatya, Turkey, and went to Germany as a 'guest-worker' in 1965. She
then went back to Turkey to study theatre, to return once again to
Germany in 1976, this time to East Berlin to work with director Benno
Besson at the Volksbuhne. Her first piece of writing in German was a
play titled Karagoz in Alamania, which was staged in 1986 in
Frankfurt. From then onwards she produced more plays, stories and
novels. Her first book is titled Mutterzunge (1990) and her first
novel, Das Leben ist eine Karawanserei (1992), won the highly
acclaimed Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1991. This book has been
translated into many languages (Life is a Caravanserai in English).
Her second novel, Die Brucke vom Goldenen Horn (1997) is a
continuation of her first novel, and her most recent book, Der Hof im
Spiegel - a collection of stories and essays - has just come out in
German.
The language Ozdamar uses draws both on German and Turkish, and it is
a new kind of German, a 'broken' German that is infused with the
sensibility of another land. "She studs her texts with literal
translations of Turkish proverbs, expressions, metaphors, slang, and
even nicknames, mixes in transliterations of Arabic prayers, and
deliberately over-uses complex German structures." She deliberately
makes 'mistakes' in German.
"Readers", says Ozdamar, "must be able to experience for themselves
the process the writer has gone through linguistically. They have to
be made to stumble, as it were."
