Call for papers: 'The Human and the Machine'
National Postgraduate Modern Languages Conference
Organised by the Schools of Modern Languages, Bristol and Exeter
Universities, Royal Fort House, University of Bristol, 4 July 2002.
The forthcoming conference builds on the link established between
Modern Languages postgraduates at the Universities of Bristol and
Exeter. Papers are also welcomed from postgraduate linguists at other
UK institutions.
Contributions are invited on any aspect of literary and cultural
studies within Modern Languages. Specific themes may include, but are
not limited to, the following:
· The human/the human body as machine, or the machine as human
· The machine (and technology) as an enhancement of human life
· The machine as present or absent in utopian models or visions
· The use of machines/technology in cinema and theatre production,
· Gender and technology or reproductive technologies
· The machine as a social, economic or political construct
· Machine-aided translation or linguistics
Accepted papers will be 20-25 minutes long.
Publication of conference proceedings is expected.
