Dear Colleagues
I'm charged with co-ordinating [a carefully chosen word] my institution's
response to the Web site accessibility requirements that are a consequence
of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Act 2001.
I don't particularly want to get into the detail of what needs to be done by
when in respect of any particular service but it is generally accepted that
1st September 2002 is the key date for compliance with the Act in terms of
accessible Web sites. I'm interested in knowing what other universities are
doing in respect of centrally co-ordinated activities and I'd be very
grateful if you [or an appropriate colleague] could reply to the following
questions. I'm simply trying to get a feel for what is going on across the
sector so full or partly null replies to the questions are sought also.
Please reply directly to me [ mailto:[log in to unmask] ] and not to the
list. All responses will be treated in confidence.
If I get sufficient responses I'll collate the [anonymised] results on the
Web and post the URL to the list.
1. Your name, title and responsibility in respect of Web accessibility
(optional)?
2. Name of institution (optional)?
3. Number of full-time students?
4. Number of full-time academic staff?
5. Does your university have a policy on making its Web sites accessible?
- if yes, and not confidential, please send URL or email attachment.
6. Does your university have a strategy and plan for implementing that
policy?
- if yes, briefly describe what that strategy and plan consists of;
- are you complying to a particular level (eg W3C-WAI AA)?
- what incentives/sanctions do you have in place?
7. If it is a centrally co-ordinated initiative, has a budget been
allocated?
- if yes, some indication of the order please (<10k, 10k-49k, 50k-99k,
>100k)
8. Do you have central support staff working p/t or f/t on this activity?
- if yes, numbers please.
9. Are you centrally providing accessibility-related training courses for
Web publishers?
10. Anything else you think would be helpful ... ?
Many thanks for your time.
Regards,
Mike
