Check out:
http://bodington.org/index.html
Bodington is an open source VLE developed within higher education for
higher education. Strong links with university library in development.
Then there is COSE; not exactly open source, they say: "COSE is NOT
freeware or shareware, but the licence is free. We intend to make COSE
available as an Open Source release ASAP." You do have to pay for a
support contract. COSE is working very hard on interoperability issues.
See: http://www.staffs.ac.uk/COSE/ for further info. Once again,
developed (and still being developed) within HE, and been in use for
over 4 years now.
Then there is COLLOQUIA: http://www.colloquia.net/
Also developed within HE. Learning management and groupware, free to
non-profit educational establishments.
I'm sure there are more, that's all I can think of just now.
