Greetings.
I believe that standards - in the sense ably defined by Scott Wilson - are
important. I also believe that they ought to be transparent to the average
user (lecturer and student).
If they are got right by the technically-aware, they can form part of
templates used by those developing materials, and be part of the information
provided when you are training people 'how to' create resources.
Not long after we got married, my husband (a Chartered Engineer) and I were
installing a new piece of electrical equipment. As I was wiring up the plug,
he asked me, "Are you fussy about cable guards?"
"No," I replied. "I just use them."
That's how we ought to use standards - just use them. They're tools, part of
the environment in which we are providing online resources. As we want to be
able to share resources throughout the sector (and beyond) they will become
more and more necessary... but not intrusive, just part of the process.
