Research Studentship: Aircraft Exernalities
An excellent opportunity to study the environmental externalities of air travel. The
student would be expected to explore the factors relating to aircraft operation which
may cause disturbance, for example, noise, vibration, air pollution, safety, odours, with
a focus on valuation issues. It is expected that the study will concentrate on one or
more of the following areas: comparison of valuation approaches; development of
stated preference approaches; presentational issues and the linking of perception,
attitudes and values to measured and modelled aircraft noise data. The student will be
based at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, a 5* (the top rating in
the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise) research department. This studentship is
funded by EUROCONTROL, the European organisation dedicated to Air Traffic
Management. The study will be undertaken in collaboration with the EUROCONTROL
Experimental Centre located at Brétigny-sur-Orge, south of Paris.
Applicants should hold a good honours degree (2.1 or above) in a numerate subject. A
degree with an economics content would be helpful as would knowledge/experience of
the transport sector, stated preference analysis and appraisal. We are seeking a
candidate with enthusiasm and commitment, who is able to exploit this opportunity to
the full.
This studentship pays a stipend of £10,000 per annum, and pays fees in full, both for a
period of three years, subject to satisfactory progression. Additional support of up to
£10,000 for items such as survey costs and travel is available over the period of the
studentship. EUROCONTROL will also provide support in kind, which is likely to take
the form of technical support and supervision. This studentship is open to candidates
from any country.
