ROAD FREIGHT STATISTICS - RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
Quality Assurance Review - New Vans Surveys - Foreign Vehicles Survey

There have been many recent developments in the collection of data on road freight statistics.  This seminar will provide an overview of these developments and give details of new surveys about the activity of vans and foreign vehicles. 

DfT's road freight surveys have been subject to a Quality Assurance Review, now in its closing stages, to examine whether they are meeting user needs and determine how they could be improved.  John Garnsworthy is the Statistician in charge of the road freight surveys at DfT, and he will outline the findings of the Review and describe the proposed changes.
The use of vans has increased dramatically over the last few years, but little is know about their activity.  The Department has therefore launched two new surveys, one of privately owned vans and one for company owned vans, with initial results expected early next year.  The development of the new Lorry Road User Charging Scheme has led to a demand for much more information on the activity of non-UK registered vehicles whilst in the UK.  Some information is already available from a variety of sources, and DfT is in the process of commisioning a new survey of foreign vehicle activity to provide a fuller picture of the activity of these lorries.  Jenny King is an Assistant Statistician in Transport Statistics Freight Division in DfT, and she will summarise the data already available, and describe the new vans surveys and the new survey of foreign vehicle activity.  

The seminar will be held at 2.30pm on Tuesday 3rd December 2002 in Room LG1 at the Department for Transport, Great Minster House, 76 Marsham Street London SW1P 4DR, followed by the TSUG AGM.
