Subject: Research Leadership Position - UMTRI
Division Head
Engineering Research Division
and Senior Research Scientist
The University of Michigan
Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI)
Applications are invited for the position of Division Head and Senior
Research Scientist of the Engineering Research Division (ERD) of the
University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The
Institute itself is a multidisciplinary unit of the University of
Michigan focusing on the complex human and technological system which
governs the way the motor vehicle is operated, especially as regards its
traffic-safety outcomes. The ERD group of UMTRI is a world leader in
exploring and explaining the dynamics and control of the driving
process, in collaboration with investigators from other UMTRI divisions,
academic units, and industrial partners.
The Head of ERD will be responsible for leading the Division, providing
scientific and managerial direction in the conception, development, and
execution of the research program. Responsibilities include planning and
promoting a research portfolio, conceiving and articulating research
methods, cultivating collaborative partnerships by which the research is
often carried out, and ensuring the scholarly dissemination of project
results in journals and conference proceedings. The Division Head
collaborates in the preparation of proposals, the authorship of
publications, and the conduct of research. Managerial duties include the
supervision of a staff of approximately 20 research engineers,
programmers, technicians, students and administrative personnel
comprising the Division.
Candidates should have a strong combination of training and experience
in engineering, with an established background in scientific research.
Specialty expertise in the dynamics and control of the motor vehicle is
highly desirable. Although not a requirement of the position, it is also
desired that the Division Head would receive a joint appointment within
an academic unit of the University, (e.g., a department of the College
of Engineering) as appropriate.
The hope is to have a candidate in place by the summer of 2003. Review
of applications will start November 15, 2002, but submissions will be
accepted until the position is filled.
A complete statement of the position and a broad description of the work
of this research unit of UMTRI can be accessed through the following web
site:

Personal inquiries can be directed to the current ERD Head, Robert
Ervin, by reply e-mail or by phone to (734) 936-1066.
