it is not that difficult to create your own brain for rendering (use the
brain extract function in SPM and choose "rendering"). For individuals,
the individual brain obviously offers the best solution, and even for
groups, the brain of the averaged anatomical image will be most
appropriate.
My personal impression is that due to the huge variability in cortical
sulcul configuration, rendering results on the single-subject brain may
look fancier, but give a false sense of localization. Rendering on the
smooth average seems more appropriate to me in most cases. That's also
the way I went for our pediatric data.
