Michael:
I forgot to mention that a hot filament is much more susceptible to early
failure from vibration and trauma than a cold filament, especially on 24
volts. In other words unnecessary operation increases replacement costs
significantly on the above grounds alone, let alone chewing through the
500-600 hours design life of 24 volt headlights.
And I'm sure you've realised that given Australia's high ambient light
levels, daytime running lights would most likely have to be brighter than
the ones in Sweden to be seen.
And of course there's the matter of contrast between the light and a light
coloured, brightly lit landscape to consider.
Exempting heavy vehicles on the reasonable grounds that their large frontal
area makes them easy to see anyway, compared with the increasingly low
frontal area of low drag coefficient cars would be a step in the right
direction for any such daytime running lights proposals, but we would still
be sceptical of their value in Oz, even for cars.
Regards,
Bob Murphy
