'Blame it on your Genes?'
BBC/The Wellcome Trust
Open House on Genetics
Are you shy or an extrovert? A risk taker or a cautious soul? Are you fat,
thin, tall, short? An athlete or a couch potato?
And how many of these characteristics do you share with your parents?
We are all a mixture of our genetic make-up and our upbringing, but until
now, the balance of nature and nurture was largely unknown. But we are
learning more and more about how our genes effect our health, well-being and
behaviour. So what can we do with this knowledge? Change our lifestyle and
behaviour - or just blame it on our genes?
As part of their Gene Stories season, the BBC have teamed up with the
independent research-funding charity, the Wellcome Trust, to run a series of
Open Houses on Genetics. These six events will take place at Science
Centres in Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle, Cardiff, London and Belfast in
February and March 2002.
The Cardiff event will take place at Techniquest on Monday 4th March. The
debate will be hosted by Nicola Heywood-Thomas, from BBC Radio Wales and
will be from 7.30 - 9.00pm. Audience members are invited from 6.30pm for a
complimentary glass of wine and exclusive out of hours access to the centre.
Admission is free.
The format of the evening will be informal, accessible and entertaining with
lots of opportunities to ask questions or add your voice to the debate.
