Can the markets save the environment?
A joint event with The Economist
The green activist orthodoxy has it that market capitalism must be
restrained or superseded, in order to combat pollution, species depletion,
climate change and general environmental despoliation. But an increasingly
salient counter-current in the academy and the environmental movement argues
differently: that judicious engagement with global markets, and the use of
market mechanisms such as emissions trading, will prove to be the best way
to achieve common goals of sustainability. A distinguished panel surveys the
current state of the debate. The panel includes Julian Morris (Institute of
Economic Affairs), Dan Dudek (Economic Defence), Charles Secrett (Director
of Friends of the Earth) and Ruth Greenspan-Bell (member of the leading USA
environmental think-tank 'Resources for the Future'). The debate will be
chaired by The Economist's Environment and Energy Correspondent, Vijay
Vaitheeswaran.
Tickets cost £10, £7 for Ri Members and concessions, and includes a
pre-lecture reception at 6.30pm. To book please visit www.rigb.org or
telephone the 24-hour recorded booking line on 020 7670 2985.
