In today's Telegraph, Nobel laureate Harry Kroto accuses television managers
of ignoring scientists. Scientists "have no outlet and there are few
opportunities to get accurate information from the people at the sharp end
of science". Apparently, people should be just as ashamed of not knowing
about science as they would be of not having read Shakespeare.
What? Isn't he living in the past? There's tons of science on television.
There are science outlets galore across the media now. Surely the issue is
how well scientists use these outlets, not how many there are. In contrast,
I can't remember when I last saw Shakespeare on television and I don't think
I've ever met anyone ashamed of having not read Shakespeare. I've never
heard Shakespeare discussed in my local pub but there have been comments and
rows about science many times. What world does Harry live in?
