I'm pleased to see that the COPUS comments have started to get slightly
more constructive - lets see if we can keep it going - knocking copy is
easy but does it actually move us forward.
My own view is that there is a role for an umbrella organisation such as
COPUS. On virtually every occasion when two or more 'science communicators'
get together sooner or later the sentiment will be expressed that we need
co-ordinated information, examples of 'best practice', a one-stop shop for
'grants' information, evaluation studies of why certain types of events
don't work/or why certain types of audiences are harder to reach than
others. It may also be that an organisation such as COPUS could take on
political agendas such as how to get 'recognition/benefit' for the
individual scientists who engage in 'public' activities.
I'm sure that many of us (in the business) can identify items/work which we
cannot do ourselves (usually for resource reasons) that we can see a need
for and that an organisation like COPUS could do on behalf of the whole
community.
So, let's be positive....COPUS should be working for us, but that implies
that we are prepared to take some responsibility for telling COPUS what we
need.
