Why not bite the bullet and make what we now call COPUS the sci comm
grants office of the RS? After all, "COPUS" is never going to enter the
language as, say, "LASER" has. And frankly, whilst I have always
acknowledged copus funding, when talking to members of the "General
Public" I have often said that the RS has funded it, simply because even
if someone does not know exactly what the RS is, the words themselves
mean something!
Surely we do not have a problem with our "National Academy of Sciences"
offering grants for sci. com? They offer grants for research,
fellowships, travel, history of science, etc - so why not sci. com. How
about RS Sci Com. Fellowships - might put our game on the same footing
as "real" fellowships...??? An increased level of 'normalisation' and
integration can only be a good thing in the eyes of a cash-strapped
university or science centre (for example) can't it?
I'll just qualify the above by saying that I support COPUS (having
received a fair few of their shillings); and as some will know, I am an
active and very practical supporter of both the BA and the Ri. Thwump!!
- that was my brick-bat shield deploying itself.
