I think Uncle Ez wrote rather more than 6, Barry!
To clarify what I was thinking of: my thought is of a number, like 4 or 6,
of pieces which seem to be going in the direction one desires, not
necessarily wholly satisfactory in themselves, but signposts toward that
occasional encounter with the right thing. A lot of pomes one writes are the
equivalent of training exercises, things to keep one in trim, as it were.

Dave, Without checking, I believe that Ezra Pound wrote that 6 were enough
for a lifetime. Though when I heard Henry Taylor mention at a reading that
he averaged 6/year, my first reaction was "pity", especially considering
