the Gabe/Henry exchange is inriguing but I'm wondering if, to those of us
in such 'marginal' cultures as Australia, NZ, Canada may feel that it has
an awful lot to do with the fact that they're writing from the USA, with
it's huge, cultural, demands upon the individual to 'make it big' in
whatever area, even the 'paltry' one of poetry?
I mean, here we just don't worry that bone so hard. And yet we do ask many
of those questions, & sometimes answer them one way, sometimes another. I
do still find my personal pleasure an important part of my reading (& I
'heard' Ron S 'enjoying' some of the poetry he talks about in his blog).
And I come to it thinking, as a critical reader too. Can't help it after
all these years...
And, god knows, i believe (& teach) that a person has to read if s/he
wishes to write anything well at all...

We are stuck with technology when what we really want
is just stuff that works. How do you recognize
something that is still technology?
A good clue is if it comes with a manual.
