from the distinguished 'European intellectual' George Steiner, I take it
you've heard of him. You are quite right, btw, to say the same situation
exists in Spanish. Steiner makes the same point too. It was, too, a 'lingua
franca' I was referring too, not the delightful variety and range of idioms
that exist in the globe-spread languages.
I did not employ Eliot's word 'purify' (that idiosyncratic translation of
Mallarme's rather different meaning) in my allusion to it, only the
'dialects of the tribe' phrase, which, you must admit, is quite memorable.
