ADVANCE NOTICE - PROFESSOR OF DESIGN RESEARCH (or Associate Professor)
Faculty of Art & Design, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia

The Faculty of Art & Design of Monash University is in the process of
establishing a professorial (or associate professorial) position in
design research. Advance notice of this is being given because the Dean
of the Faculty, Professor John Redmond, will be in London at the 'Common
Ground' Conference being held at Brunel University from 5th to 7th
September 2002, and he will be pleased to discuss the proposed position
with interested researchers.

The details of the position are anticipated to be as follows:

It is anticipated that Monash University will be seeking an outstanding
appointee for this new position to provide academic and research
leadership across the Faculty of Art & Design, particularly in the
design disciplines, but also potentially in the multimedia and digital
arts field. The appointee will be expected to guide the development of
research in the Department of Design and potentially the Department of
Multimedia & Digital Arts, and to contribute to the Faculty 's
leadership team, particularly in research.

The Department of Design comprises the fields of visual communications,
industrial design and interior architecture and offers professional
degrees in each area. The Department of Multimedia & Digital Arts
comprises the fields of multimedia, photomedia and creative arts. It
has a vigorous postgraduate coursework program in multimedia. Both
departments offer the Master of Design by coursework, Master of Design
by research and the PhD.

The Faculty of Art & Design is in an expansionary mode and is actively
seeking to develop the quantity and quality of its activities. As well
as design, multimedia and digital arts, the Faculty includes all of the
major fine and applied arts, studio disciplines, as well as theory and
history studies, and the Faculty Gallery.

Design and Multimedia & Digital Arts are both major development areas of
the Faculty. Their undergraduate courses are particularly successful.
This position is being proposed in order to develop research activities
and external engagement.

The appointee that would be sought will be a highly energetic, focussed
'builder' who will work with the staff of the Faculty and departments to
develop and implement the Faculty and the University's academic and
research objectives in design and related areas. The appointee will
have a distinguished record of achievement in research at a national and
international level in design and related areas, and a proven record of
developing the research profile of organisations in which he or she has
been involved. Continuing development of the successful candidate's
research record to maintain the highest international standards and
profile will be expected. The appointee will be expected to have sound
business and strategic development capabilities to ensure successful
project outcomes. The appointee will be concerned with design as a
discipline underlying a range of professional practices, as well as with
his or her own field of research. He/she will be expected to encourage,
advise and direct staff in all the design areas to develop their
research activities and capabilities. Depending on his or her
capabilities, the appointee's responsibilities may cover the development
of research in both the Department of Design and the Department of
Multimedia & Digital Arts, and extend to the theory of art and design
areas.

Confidential enquiries regarding the proposed position may be made with
Professor John Redmond, Dean, Faculty of Art & Design,
