Consanguineous marriage in the UK: A multidisciplinary strategy
Monday 4 February 2002
The Royal Society of Medicine,
1 Wimpole Street, London, W1G OAE
In communities of European origin consanguineous marriage is
uncommon,
and people who are considering marrying a relative are often referred
for specialist genetic counselling. In several minority ethnic groups
in the UK, cousin marriage is a longstanding custom that performs
highly valued social functions. However, the associated increase in
birth prevalence of children with recessively-inherited disorders in
these groups is causing serious concern. The time has come to
address
this problem at a national level by developing a culturally-sensitive,
integrated national strategy for genetic counselling in relation to
consanguineous marriage. This multidisciplinary conference will
explore relevant issues and present the strategy, for discussion.
