Dear All,
I thought I must bring to the attention of list members three books that I
have just completed reading.
The first is "Out of the Pennines" pbld. by The Friends of Killhope, and
edited by Bryan Chambers. It is a very well presented aprx. A4 pbl., and
covers many aspects of Teesdale and Weardale mining with 'sections' written
by local retired professional mining men, and others with a deep interest in
both Dales. I can guarantee a really good read, and a very worthy addition to
anyone's mining library - it has one of the best mining paintings I have seen
as a front cover (Cow Green Mine). It also fully details the Hedworth Barium
Co. that I asked about a while ago!
The second and third books are: "South West Granite - A History of the
Granite Industry in Cornwall and Devon" by Peter Stanier. A really excellent
book, with a real wealth of p.graphs, and a p.graph. of one of the largest
blocks of quarried granite I have ever seen, though' taken before 1900 - it
has what must be nearly a couple of hundred quarrymen standing on top of it!
The second is "Images of Cornish Tin", by Alan Stoyel & Peter Williams. There
is not much more that I can say about this book, other than it's huge
superbly produced (mostly colour) content is unsurpassed. It is a complete
pictorial history of the dying embers of what is left of Cornish mining; what
is left now, and was left over the last 30 or 40 years. A true record, very
professionally produced. Always good to pick up accurate books such as the
above, and these are true examples of same.
I purchased these books from the Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum a few weeks
ago, and am sure they have other copies. If you are interested in these books
I am sure they will be pleased to help you out - and at the same time you
will be helping a very good cause at the same time. They carry a very large
range of books - they have a superb 1st edit. copy of Simonin as well! -
pant, pant! The museums contacts below (Ian & Jean Tyler).
I hope the above is of use to you. Regards, Bernard.
