Directorship of the Needham Research Institute

On the retirement as Director of Professor Ho Peng-Yoke, the East Asian
History of Science Trust seeks candidates with a proven international
reputation for research in the history of Chinese science and civilisation
(broadly construed) for the post of full-time Director of the Needham
Research Institute.

This is a permanent appointment with important potential for developing
academic excellence in one of the world's leading centres of the History of
Chinese Science.

A key role of the Director will be to provide intellectual and practical
leadership in developing research plans and obtaining funds to consolidate
the work begun by Joseph Needham through his important Science and
Civilisation in China project.

The Director will also be expected to expand the horizons of the Institute
to incorporate and oversee new lines of research now being pursued in
Chinese Studies and the History and Philosophy of Science.  He or she will
interface closely with its sister organisations in Hong Kong and the United
States and with the Institute for the History of Natural Science in Beijing,
and will develop constructive relationships with the East Asian Institute,
the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of History and Philosophy of
Science and the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology in the University of
Cambridge. He or she should have proven administrative ability,

The stipend and residence requirements of the Directorship will be those of
a Professor in the University of Cambridge.  It is expected that the
appointment will be made to the retiring age.  The Director will be expected
to take up duties by 1 October 2002 at the latest.
