HIDDEN TREASURES
The impact of moving image and sound archives in the 21st Century
----------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, 7 October 2002
at the British Library Conference Centre London
Moving image and sound are today used in almost every sphere of human
activity: in the entertainment and broadcasting industries, in the arts and
publishing, in academic study and research in both sciences and humanities,
and of course in the cyber-environment of the world-wide web.
Organised by the British Film Institute, the British Library National Sound
Archive, the British Universities Film & Video Council, the Film Archive
Forum, and the National Council on Archives, Hidden Treasures considers the
central importance of moving images and sound to our heritage and
present-day culture, the necessity of adequate funding for the archives that
preserve such materials, and asks why there is a lack of any coherent
infrastructure for moving image and sound archives in the UK.
The conference is chaired by Gillian Reynolds, Radio Critic of the Daily
Telegraph and speakers include:
* Sir Christopher Frayling, Royal College of Art
* Joan Bakewell, British Film Institute/Film Council
* Taylor Downing, Flashback Television
* Lord Evans, Resource
* Liz Forgan, Heritage Lottery Fund
* Crispin Jewitt, British Library National Sound Archive
* Derek Law, University of Strathclyde
* James Patterson, Media Archive for Central England
* Trevor Phillips, London Assembly
The cost of attending Hidden Treasure is £120 (£99 if booked before 31
August 2002).
