Blood, Text and Fears:
Reading Around Buffy the Vampire Slayer
A one-day conference to be held at
University of East Anglia, Norwich
19 October 2002
jointly organised by Film Studies and the British Centre for Literary
Translation, School of English and American Studies
and the School of Language, Linguistics and Translation Studies
Since the series first aired, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been
appropriated, discussed, deconstructed, and dismissed by a multitude of
communities within the public sphere. This conference seeks to address the
diversity of ways in which the series has permeated popular and academic
discourse and cultural contexts alike.
Proposals are invited for 15-20 minute papers on any aspect of Buffy the
Vampire Slayer or Angel and related texts. Possible topics and approaches
include:
· Words and meaning: Language, translation, applied linguistics
· Psychoanalysis, (post)feminism, queer theory, camp
· Genre: film, fanfiction, novelisations, comic books
· Hacking and slashing: combat, martial arts, the web
· Buff bodies, cool clothes
· Books, scrolls, libraries, research
· Intertextuality, recurrences, story arcs
· Viewers, watchers, consumers
This list is in no way exhaustive and the organisers welcome a wide range of
approaches.
It is anticipated that a publication will follow the conference. Enquiries
