Dear List,
As a freelance information consultant, now presumably in competition with
CILIP, I'm not sure that I have ever really understood the concept of an "out
of office reply". My office is wherever I am and can I pick up my e-mail.
Sad, I know. Whenever I see an "Out of office" I tend to think: "Goodness!
This Gal/Guy has an office! Respect! and delete the message.
I'm not sure that it was all that different when I had an office and was
surrounded by all the usual support network. Except perhaps that e-mail had
not really taken off: It kind of appeared in the mid 1980s, lost out for a
while to Fax, then re-merged with the Internet in the mid 1990s. Thank
goodness for that.
My serious point is that in my view LIS-CILIP should be about matters
concerning CILIP and its members and not about how to use the list. "Out of
Office" replies appear on every list I use but can be deleted in an instant.
It's great to know who is in charge, but Sheila Corrall's suggestions on how
to avoid these "out of office" messages seem eminently sensible to me; let''s
leave it at that and move on to more relevant and useful business.
All best wishes,
Patrick
