Why should CILIP change the name of Chartership? There are chartered
accountants, chartered engineers, chartered architects, to name only a few.
I think that CILIP can do more to promote Chartership with employers (and
they have been addressing this issue now for some time with the Salary
Guidelines that have been rewritten over the past 2-3 years) and we, as
members of CILIP, should be doing the same with our employers. I,
personally, think my profession is just that--a profession--and worthy of
the title. It is not just a job. I am terribly sorry you don't see it that
way--and I must say that things will never progress in the commercial world
until you do.

OK Kayla - I'll come right out and say it: it's the purely COMMERCIAL world
that I believe is on the other side of that gulf (from
Public/Academic/Government-Corporate). I just can't see the employers who
do
the hiring & firing in the City / legal / banking /accountancy /management
firms looking on Chartership (with its echoes - if it means anything to them
at
all - of the label "chartered librarian") as anything but an anachronism,
and
without relevance to their world.
Perhaps CILIP should change the name - it definitely needs to change the
image
if the qualification is to carry any weight in the nasty brutish world of
commerce!
