being totally cynical, can I put it forward, as a point for discussion,
that in the in the few and decreasing fields where chartership is still
recognised and valued, these are also areas of the profession,
where not being chartered, is often used a salary bar by employers!
Given the already low salaries that exist in the profession and the
qualifications needed to enter this imho is nothing short of a
disgrace.
From my own expereince of meeting and working many information
professionals I also assert that being chartered does not have any
correlation to the comptetence or professional awareness of an
individual. Also from an orgainsation point of view I am sure many
libraries pay lip service to the notion of the value of chartership, but
in practice this makes little difference to their organisational
capability and/or their staff development policies.
I think the whole issue is ripe for overhaul.
