Tim, I think you may have been misled into believing that I am the only person
whose record/membership card was wrong. From the correspondence I have been
receiving both on the LIS-CILIP site and individually it is becoming clear that
people who were members ONLY of the IIS all transferred quite properly as
Chartered Members/MCLIPs, and that the anomaly I pointed out has happened only
to people who were both MIInfSs and "ordinary members" of the LA before
unification.
I have now been told that the problem arose when the two membership databases
were merged, and that it has now been rectified. I have also been offered a new
membership card "if I would like" one! My query now must be how diligently
have the records been combed to find out how many members have suffered the same
apparent "downgrading" and why were replacement membership cards not sent out as
soon as the 'administrative error' was discovered? It would be extraordinary if
mine was the only one (and very bad luck for CILIP that it should be me, given
the message posted by Lyndsay Rees-Jones this morning). As it happens my
assistant has had exactly the same experience - another amazing coincidence if
two members working in the same Information Centre were the only casualties of
this error.
The rest of your posting explaining what CILIP is planning for the future sadly
fails to address the monstrous insult to a great many information & library
professionals contained in the last line of the URGENT REMINDER TO EMPLOYERS:
"....if you require professionally qualified applicants". Chartership is not
the only professional qualification as I'm sure everyone at CILIP recognises,
and in the current economic climate nobody in this profession needs employers
dissuaded from considering their job applications - least of all by their own
professional organisation from which they might have expected to receive support
and assistance.
