KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY "PRESENTS ENORMOUS OPPORTUNITIES" FOR CILIP
Report of CILIP's Competitiveness and Knowledge-Based Economy
Executive Advisory Group published
CILIP has the opportunity to play a leadership role in national,
organisational and individual competitiveness in the developing knowledge
economy, says CILIP in the Knowledge Economy: a leadership strategy, the
report of a special executive advisory group commissioned by CILIP: the
Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and chaired by
Nigel Oxbrow of TFPL. However, to realise these opportunities, "a step
change is needed".
CILIP members have traditionally focused on information from external
published sources, records managers on internal records, database experts on
specific data sets and competitive intelligence professionals on analysing
intelligence, the report points out. "This silo approach to information is
inappropriate for an organisation striving to compete in a knowledge based
economy," it continues. "Organisations need information strategies,
information policies and information architectures that include and
integrate all relevant information in the context of their goals and
objectives and that support and enable knowledge-rich cultures."
CILIP in the Knowledge Economy states that the Institute has the opportunity
to:
· become a thought leader - the acknowledged authority on the
knowledge economy
· move into a catalyst role by becoming an advocate for good
practice
· identify the information skills needed in society for the
economy to flourish
· extend its markets and become a global player
"This highly important report is one of two foundation documents for CILIP,"
says the Institute's Chief Executive Bob McKee. "Its conclusions mesh
exactly with undertakings already given in the other one - CILIP's Corporate
Plan, where we pledge to gain recognition for our authoritative role in the
knowledge economy and civil society, and to extend Membership across all
aspects and levels of the library and information and knowledge management
domain."
