Tom Roper is somewhat optimistic about the agenda being prepared well in
advance. Just in time like the Honda Motor Company. Incidentally, like
others I am happy to have my e-mail address distributed and you might like
to have a look at our excellent website

Subject: CILIP Council: transparency or obscurantism?
Liz Dubber's account is very helpful...but is there any reason why minutes
and agendas should not go up on the web site? They used to (but a long time
after the meeting) on the old LA site. On the new site at
http://www.cilip.org.uk/about/council.html you will see that the April
meeting agenda is there but only a short report, no minutes, and no sign of
the October agenda (which must have been prepared well before the meeting
itself), let alone any account of the meeting. The obvious difficulty is
that minutes are not an official record until approved by the next meeting
of Council, but could they not be qualified as "draft"?
Also intriguing that only one Council member gives their e-mail address.....
Is it necessary to argue for this by pointing out that the professional body
for our profession above all others has a duty to lead the way in good
practice in openness and accountability? I hope not...

Prompted by the contribution from Stella Clarke, am sharing my synopsis of
the CILIP Council meeting held on 2nd October. I already share this with
ASCEL members and I'm happy to do it for this mailing list in future if it
is wanted.

To reply to your query, I'd like to see CILIP distributing the minutes of
all its Council meetings, as soon as possible after the event. A bit of
"open government" would be a real breath of fresh air!

Of those few comments received, the greater number appear to prefer to see
all submissions coming back to the list as a whole, so I've re-instated the
original arrangement.
For anyone whose interested, there are currently about 350 subscribers to
the list - out of 24,000 members of CILIP! Tell your friends about the
list - but also put some good content on it.
The Publisher's Association sends it members a weekly email news bulletin.
Is that what you want to see CILIP producing?
