SUBJECT TO AUTHORITY: QUALITY CONTROL OF CATALOGUES
12 December 2002, London
The need for consistent description within a bibliographic record has long
been acknowledged and codified through structures like MARC and AACR2. What
is often less clear is how, as cataloguers or systems librarians, we
maintain the same quality of data when large numbers of bibliographic
records are brought together.
The flexibility for subject or name authority control offered by many
systems vendors now provides us with choices we may not be equipped to
evaluate and often this makes it difficult to make selections appropriate to
our users or clients.
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This practical workshop is designed for users of small to medium sized
automated systems who have to generate their own name and subject authority
structures to provide more effective document retrieval.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* practically examined the importance of authority control
* used the convention of thesaurus production
* been introduced to the Authority format of MARC21
* considered appropriate authority structures for their information
environment
WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING?
This introductory day is for those who would like to understand how to
ensure their collection does not descend into chaos.
Those who need to enhance the quality of the information they provide via
the catalogue will gain the tools to start in this workshop.
