CHEST and JISC are pleased to announce an extension of the EDucation
Literature Datasets agreement from August 2002 - July 2003.
In late May JISC Committee for Content Services (JCCS) considered the
proposal (circulated to the community on 15th May for feedback) for an
agreement for access to the British Education Index (BEI) for 2002/05.
JISC received a considerable amount of feedback on the proposal - all
feedback received by late afternoon on 21st May was collated and tabled
at the JCCS meeting on 22nd May.
There were three main strands to this feedback: - the importance of the
BEI for teaching and research in field of education - concerns about
discrepancies between institutional banding and size of subject groups
(e.g. large institutions with small education departments) - concern
about large increases in subscription costs. Some responses indicated
concerns in all three of these areas, as well as comments on the
charging bands and other JISC matters.
As a result of this feedback, the JCCS have decided that they need to
work more closely with the University of Leeds which produces the
British Education Index and which is working on a long term strategy
for the provision of this dataset, and that they need to give further
consideration to the cost recovery process for this dataset service.
The JCCS have rejected the current proposal andill consider new
proposals, based on a long term strategy, in the autumn.
Meanwhile, in order to maintain continuity of service for the year
ahead, the JCCS have agreed to subsidise a one year continuation
BEI/ERIC service hosted at BIDS/ingenta at a flat rate subscription of
£600 p.a (excluding VAT) for UK HE and FE.
This one year extension will be managed by CHEST, and details will be
posted on the CHEST website at:
http://www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/bei-eric/ shortly.
Sites that do not subscribe to the current agreement may subscribe to
this extension.
