Hi,
I am concerned to find this is the case - one would expect that both
BioMedNet and ScienceDirect would have the latest issues, indeed the same
content for each title. I don't think that this was the case previously,
although I was aware that the archives for most of the Current Opinion
journals went back further on BioMedNet than on ScienceDirect, although
again I have never understood why.
Is this not an example of product packaging i.e. getting you to pay for the
"same" content twice. I don't know if any of you who are currently
accessing the Trends/Current Opinion journals through ScienceDirect are also
considering paying additional monies to access the "same" content through
BioMedNet Reviews - although it could be argued that BioMedNet Reviews
provides additional facilities such as the "Virtual Journal".
It is also interesting to note that PubMed links to the Current
Opinion/Trends journals on BioMedNet not to ScienceDirect as other Elsevier
titles linked from PubMed do. So if you rely on ScienceDirect for your
Current Opinion/Trends access then your users won't easily be able to go to
the full text of journals that you subscribe to.
Cheers
Lesley

Subject: ScienceDirect vs BioMedNet
We have just become ScienceDirect customers. Previously we
have subscribed to some of the Elsevier Current Trends titles via
the BioMedNet service. I have been surprised to find that while
many of the Current Trends titles are up-to-date on ScienceDirect,
there are exceptions, e.g. Trends in Cell Biology, Trends in
Parasitology, Current Opinion in Biotechnology, Current Opinion in
Neurobiology, Current Opinion in Microbiology. These are all one
or two issues behind on ScienceDirect in comparison wth
Biomednet.
Can other customers advise me whether ScienceDirect is routinely
slower at loading these titles than BioMedNet?
I have queried it with Elsevier but was just given a bland assurance
that they always load issues as soon as possible.
