*** With Apologies for cross posting ***
The HERON Partnership is very pleased to announce that a preliminary
agreement has been signed between HERON and Ingenta. Completion is expected
to occur on 31st March 2002, after which Ingenta is expected to take over
the management and operations of HERON. Ingenta, the leader in the online
distribution of published scientific, professional and academic research,
provides and excellent match for HERON.
This agreement will not only ensure a bright, long term future for the HERON
service but will also bring significant benefits in both the quality of the
materials we are able to provide and in speed of provision.
HERON welcomes this development: Ingenta has not only guaranteed
continuation of the HERON service, but promises exciting opportunities for
further investment and development which we believe will offer real benefits
to the higher education community.
We would like to thank all the universities and the staff who have supported
HERON during our initial development period and we look forward to working
them in developing the service in the future.
If you have any queries, please contact Sally Curry at HERON (01786466 616,

HERON (www.heron.ac.uk)
The HERON (Higher Education ON-demand) project was established in 1998 and
arose from the JISC's eLib Phase 3 'project into service' strand. It was
created to offer improved access for students to recommended study
materials, using alternatives to the traditional library provision. HERON
now offers a national service to the UK Higher Education community for
copyright clearance, digitisation and delivery of book extracts and journal
articles. It is also developing a resource bank of digitised materials for
rapid re-use (subject to copyright permissions). HERON also offers its
members experience and strength in negotiations with publishers and other
rightsholders.
Ingenta plc (www.ingenta.com)
Ingenta is the global market leader in the management and distribution of
published scientific, professional and academic research via the Internet,
and develops and maintains specialist websites for publishers,
self-publishing societies and libraries.
