I've had a comment recently from one of our users about the search
tools that publishers provide and don't provide for their e-journals.
My user comments that what he most commonly wants to be able to do is
to be able to quickly get to *known* items. Commonly journals allow
you to search by author, title, abstract words - useful for resource
discovery but not for quick access to known items. Ideally we want
to go to a particular journal's home page, type in the volume number
and first page number of the reference to an article and then get
straight to that article.
Journals published online through Highwire Press DO have this kind of
search feature, as does Synergy, but other publishers' platforms
(e.g. ScienceDirect, IDEAL, Interscience, LINK) do not.
Do others agree that this is a very desirable feature?
