Do librarians prefer the idea of a separate product which offers content
from small publishers to aggregated databases from providers such as
EBSCO, ProQuest, Gale etc should they offer the same content?

Stephen:
Your concern is shared by
many North American librarians, who tell
us that they would like to support quality
content from smaller publishers as well
as large ones.
Our program, Consortialink, offers content from
more than 250 journals published by 14 small
to mid-sized publishers.
More information can be found at:

Our Association is looking into the possibility of addressing this
problem
by bringing together the journals of smaller (particularly
not-for-profit)
publishers to create a 'critical-mass' offering. We are still
investigating
whether a 'publishers' consortium' is actually possible, either legally
or
practically, but feel sure that we can do something - to date we have
expressions of interest from the publishers of over 70 journals, plus
databases and other materials. I recently spoke at ICOLC about this
(and
will do so at e-ICOLC early next month), but there is no reason in
principle
why whatever we do come up with should not also be applicable to
individual
libraries as well as consortia.
Watch this space!
